What is the advantage in using toe strap pedals when riding a fixed gear bike?

I have heard that it is safer!?
I can see how it could be slightly more efficient, but not much.
Nevertheless, I believe I am right in my decision to practice/get used to riding a fixed gear bike with normal strapless/clipless pedals.
I am just about to get/put together my first fixed geared bike (after falling in love after trying one) and need to be enlightened!
Thanks

1. You should ALWAYS ride a fixed with clips or clipless (SPD, Crank Brothers, etc) – especially if you don’t have brakes or just 1 brake.

Because your stopping power is in reverse pedalling, you want as much leverage as possible. I’ve only seen a handful of people skid without using clips/clipless and that’s another powerful way to stop.

2. It is not slightly more efficient; it is significantly more efficient to ride with clips and even more so with clipless.

Without clips/clipless, you lose 50% of your pedaling power on the upstroke (think of how much time your foot spends coming up). With clips, you regain about 30% and with clipless you have 100% of your pedaling power going to your strokes.

3. As a beginner, you more than anyone should be riding with clips/clipless because your legs aren’t used to reverse pedaling to brake. A person riding fixed for a long time has more stopping power than a newbie.

Get them on your pedals. Stand over your bike with one foot on the ground, and practice getting your other foot into them. People catch on much faster than they think they will.

4. It’s a common misconception that pedals without clips/straps/clicking functions are “clipless”. They’re simply platform or cage pedals.

Clipless refers to locking into your pedal without having to use clips.

5. I strongly recommend Crank Brothers Eggbeater / Candy pedals. You have a broad range of shoes and they are really easy to clip in and out of as well as fairly priced.

Also, contrary to belief, many MTB clipless pedals fit on road pedals and MTB clipless shoes less expensive and more comfortable.

If you’re concerned as a beginner of getting stuck in them (which is more likely with clips than clipless actually) you should try Power Straps. They are as easy and cheap as it gets with clipping into your pedal.

6. Clipless pedals make your bike less appealing to steal because a carless thief has to have clipless shoes to ride it away.
