Main differences about western and english riding?
Well I’m switching from english riding to western. Now I’m getting western showmanship and pleasure lessons so I can compete. Other than the tack, what are the main differences in the styles and is the western competition atmosphere different to that of the english competition atmosphere?
Thanks
Horses who go western carry themselves in a different way than those that go, say, jumper. As you know, there are many subcategories to “English” riding. The same is true of western. Some western subcategories want a horse to move slowly, head long and low and ‘floating’. Some want a more collected, faster paced, working-type outline. Western pleasure, at least when I was showing, was very much a slow (but still forward), long and low class.
The showing atmosphere is about the same. Everywhere you go you will have those snobby folks as well as the kind ones (I met some of my best friends riding dressage). Don’t expect that just because you are riding in what some consider a more relaxed discipline that you or your horse can be lax in any way. You still need impulsion, collection and to look polished. You still need to work, your horse still needs to be in prime condition and finely tuned and you will still get tired from your lessons!
There really isn’t too much vastly different between the two disciplines, other than, as someone else said- there is usually no posting and the gaits are named differently (trot = jog, canter = lope). Some of the classes are similar, just named differently than English ones so ask your trainer before you sign up. As for dress, in English people try to look tidy and plain. It’s all very rigid- tan britches, black boots, black or navy jacket and white shirt. In western you have more wiggle room as far as outfits go, but you still have to look professional. You can go with just about any color you like- no more beige or tan, I’d bet- and have a bit of fun with “bling” just don’t get gaudy. For showmanship, the same rules apply as in English showmanship. You still need an impeccably clean horse, great conformation, tidy dress, and to know your quarters. Western showmanship horses usually do a turn on the haunches to change direction or to turn around after you trot away from the judge. Western showmanship is done in a carefully chosen leather halter and lead, not a bridle. Also, you either band or neatly pull your horses mane and don’t braid. There are some other restrictions (that vary from show to show) about equipment, like bits, tie downs, leg wear, etc. that you’ll need to check as some equipment that may have been ‘acceptable’ in some english classes may not be allowed in some western ones.
The horses are of the same caliber. You still need the same basic skills and refinement. Your competition will be about the same; you’ll still get the stars and the not-so-spectacular.
Good luck.
