Using a spray collar to teach my beagle off-leash obedience?
Ok, so here’s the deal:
I have two beagles, spayed sisters from the same litter. One of them is the runt, and she’s completely dependable off-leash if I have her sister on leash. Now I would really, and I mean REALLY like to teach the other one to come on command, or at least stay within my eyesight, so that they could both enjoy running together especially during our upcoming holidays!
What I have done so far is:
1. dog school: basic obedience work such as heeling, sitting, down etc. – works 100% if I have food in my hand… but I want the recall to be reliable, which it is definitely not.
2. plenty of excersize & socializing – I’m talking 3 hours a day, which are usually spent at the dog park, plus hours and hours of running around in the yard
3. trying to break the hunting drive by telling her to sit calmly when she sees a cat – works well on leash, not at all off-leash…
Spray collar or not? Alternatives? How to train this? I’d be very grateful for any advice!
You’re doing lots of good things. I also have a hunting dog with very strong hunting instincts. But at age five he now knows that he can go after some things in our yard that he can’t go when we’re out for a walk. Now that it is firm in his mind where his yard is, he won’t even go into our neighbors’ yard or run across the street.
Of course I give him lots of praise for using good judgement for staying in his yard and he’s been like this for a year or so. So my answer to you is that time is on your side-keep up what you are doing, give her lots of praise and she will prove to be your best friend.
