Lung cancer in nonsmokers

More and more often I come across cases of nonsmokers who develop lung cancer. My attention always attracted by news of this nature, because my husband died at the age of 51 years of brain and lung cancer. He never smoked in her life.

Non-smokers have the kindness shared over the years is no longer a viable option. Smokers and nonsmokers are vulnerable to the disease is largely incurable. Between patients with lung cancer, only about 14% alive five years after diagnosis.

In the face of a disease that seems to there is no rhyme or reason, what can we do to protect ourselves? First, assess your risk of lung cancer, then take measures to prevent disease.

What are the risk factors for lung cancer?

Gender: Unfortunately, women seem more vulnerable to lung cancer. Research has shown that smokers are more susceptible to chemical carcinogens in cigarettes. In another study, a gene related with abnormal cell growth of lung cancer was found to be more active in women than in men. There does not matter whether women smoked or not.

Family history of lung cancer: The facts show that there is a gene for lung cancer that predispose children to develop lung cancer. However, the evidence is far from conclusive that the situation is complicated by the fact that children of smokers were exposed to a smoke free environment from childhood and therefore have an increased risk of developing the disease.

The scars of previous lung disease: Scarring of the lungs caused by tuberculosis or other lung disease may be a risk factor for lung cancer.

The secondhand smoke: Exposure to secondhand smoke has proven to be a factor risk. Your risk increases by 30 percent of the daily exposure to secondhand smoke. Probably the most important risk factor for lung cancer in nonsmokers.

Exposure to Radon: Radon is an odorless gas that can seep into the floor of the buildings. Worse, the gas can seep into the water on the floor near residential communities. Radon has been cited as a potential cause of lung cancer.

Air Pollution: Long-term exposure to work to the fumes of diesel exhaust may increase risk of lung cancer by 47%. Air pollution in general is a risk factor in the general population. The Swedish researchers estimate that fewer than 1 in 10 cases of lung cancer can be caused by air pollution in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

After treatment: the Swedish researchers who reviewed the medical records of 140,000 patients with breast cancer concluded that there was an increased cancer lung 5 to 20 years after treatment for breast cancer. Suspicion is that the radiation in the chest area may have made the lungs more susceptible to the disease.

Estrogen replacement therapy: According to University of Pittsburgh researchers, estrogen can increase the growth of cancers in non-small cell lung cancer cells.

What are the preventive measures we can take?

Diet: An apple a day may prevent lung cancer away. A Finnish study shows that apples do not keep the doctors away, but protecting your lungs. This study found that people who ate the most apples 58% less likely to develop lung cancer. Other studies suggest that cancer risk lung is lower among smokers and nonsmokers who consumed at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Beta-carotene: A high consumption of compounds beta-carotene may reduce lung cancer risk, but studies also show that beta-carotene is only effective when the compounds are ingested food whole, such as peaches, melons, carrots, mangoes, green leafy vegetables, pumpkins, etc. The opposite seems to occur with beta carotene. A Finnish study reported 18% more cases of lung cancer in heavy smokers who took beta-carotene supplements. And a study by the National Cancer on the effects of vitamin A and beta-carotene was discontinued because smokers taking the supplements had lung cancer 28% more than those taking a placebo.

Selenium and vitamin C intake of selenium supplements in a long term basis has been shown to decrease the incidence of lung cancer. In one study, people taking 55-200 mcg of ore per day were 46% lower rate of lung cancer. Furthermore, studies indicate that people who have less than 90 mg daily of vitamin C may have risk of lung cancer 90% higher than those taking 140 mg or more.

Avoid secondhand smoke and check your home for radon.

There are never guarantees in life, but it makes perfectly good sense to take certain preventive measures because not only can improve the overall quality of health and life, but also prevent lung cancer.
