Full seat breeches verses knee patch breeches?
I currently school & show in tan knee patch breeches, currently only in schooling shows. At my barn, there seems to be a trend towards knee patch breeches.
What are the pros and cons of full seat and knee patch breeches, and is there a ‘preffered’ style when showing? What kind do you ride in?
I do have a limited budget (thats the life of a highschooler, haha) plus I only ride seasonally so I’d rather spend a good amount on one pair of schooling & show breeches rather than buy seperate pairs.

Traditionally, full seat breeches are used by the dressage riders, and knee patch by jumpers/hunters.
The full seat tends to “stick” you to the saddle, and when jumping can make it difficult to be as mobile in the saddle as you need to be.
If you are riding dressage and need help sitting with a big moving horse, then the full seats are nice.
Then there is a kind called “extended patch” which covers the inner leg but not the bum. I like these as a nice compromise. It gives you a bit more grip, but doesn’t stick you down too much.
My first riding instructor wouldn’t let us have full seat breeches until we were doing first level work. They are kind of a cheat, and if you don’t have good balance, they will stick you in a nice crooked position.
Since you are a seasonal rider, and have budget constraints, I would go with knee patch. (Once you ride in full seat, you will never go back, but what you don’t know about you won’t miss)
