Western horse — running martingale?
I grew up racing and training gymkhana so I usually used a tiedown. This time I have a 6 y.o. Arabian gelding that is strictly a pleasure horse. No racing, showing or jumping, but he hasn’t had a much riding with an experienced rider so he’s developed some bad habits. Most problematic is his constant playing with his head. Tossing, shaking, chewing on his reins if he can catch them. I don’t believe a tiedown will serve the purpose I need and would be too hard a correction for this issue. I know martingales are always a subject of debate, but I am considering using one for training until I get his head habits under control. I want to keep his mouth soft, but I’m having to get heavy handed to correct him. From what I’ve read and heard from other riders a running martingale would give me better directional control to correct his head. I would appreciate suggestions and feedback.
PS. I’ve got him on a thin snaffle and ensured it is properly fitted.
I’ve used a running martingale for training and thought it was great. Just remember to loosen up on the reins when the head is set in the proper position, and only apply pressure when the head is “outside” the frame. I have found Arabians to be very intelligent and usually don’t need much if they trust you. You might do well with a hackmore, using mostly leg and seat control and minimal hands. But you shouldn’t need anything more than a snaffle, unless you’re going to show, then you’ll have to train with the curb.
