Has anyone had any success with a VERY cinchy horse?
I have the perfect horse in every way except he is extremely cinchy. He used to be a roping horse and the woman I bought him from said she basically rescued him. The ropers cinched him up very tight and would leave him that way all day. He’d develop sores and they’d cinch him up and ride him anyway. The minute you grab the girth strap and start to cinch him up he starts to move all over; back up and rear. It takes a lot of patience, walking him around and doing it very slowly; inch by inch. It’s embarrassing around other people and it’s nerve racking for me. When he tries to avoid it he moves from side to side and could knock me over. I work with him and he is a very respectful horse. I don’t think it’s disrespect; I think it’s genuine fear.
In 1970, I bought a 7 year old AQHA mare named “Irish Squaw”, she was the first cinchy horse I’d ever owned. You’d go to cinch her up and if you didn’t untie her, she’d set back on whatever she was tied to and bust it. After a couple of years of working with her, she became pretty civilized until I loaned her to a gal I had gone to school with for an FFA rodeo.
She came back far worse than she’d ever been! You’d go to cinch her up and she’d RUN backwards!
I finally ended up trading her off for a TB gelding who only thought he was cinchy.
