cycling pedal question….?
im a little confused on the new cycling pedal updates. .
i have the old shimano clip ins on both my cannodale road and mountain bikes (i guess this is considered 2 bolt?? )
so now shimano has updated?
1. what systems are my current pedals/shoes comp. with
2. what is the best system to get so that i can use a dual
system for both road and mtn? (look?? )

Yep…you have the extremely common 2-bolt “SPD” setup. It’s used on lots of styles of road and mountain pedals/shoes. There is also the standard 3-bolt Look style which is exclusively on road pedals. Many road shoes will accept both styles….mountain shoes are only 2-bolt. Also, there are some fidgety bulky adapters available for switching between the systems if need be….I wouldn’t recommend them, though.
If you want a crossover system for your bikes, I’d highly recommend Crank Brothers pedals. They use the 2-bolt design, and have great products. Any of their “mountain” pedals can be used on your road bike, but they also have a very nice road pedal called the Quattro. I’ve seen a lot of road bikes with the Candy pedals on them….lightweight and simple, but still have a bit of a platform on them for shoe support. Setting up your bikes this way is nice because you can use the same shoe on either bike if you want to….and if you tend to keep your shoes in the car, you have insurance that you’ll never show up to a ride with the wrong shoe!
There are plenty of other options, but this is what I do. Eggbeaters and Mallets on the dirt bikes, and Quattros on the road bike…..works great for me.
The Time brand is another one well suited for this, and there are lots of options with Shimano as well.
So….it’s not as complex as you think. Just remember that the cleats are specific to the pedal, so choose your matching pedal system based on that if you want to use the same shoe for both bikes. Also, you don’t want “road” pedals and cleats on the mountain bike trails. You can do it, but it’s usually a foolish choice in the end….so keep that in mind.
