Rowing Gloves for Crew? Way too many blisters, need help?
So I am on Varsity crew at my school, and have rowed for two years now. I have always suffered from an abnormal amount of blisters (that get ripped off quickly and leave raw skin). I have like a dozen raw spots on my hands, it is painful, ugly, and probs not very healthy (disease attraction?)
I need someway to not get them anymore. Gloves? What type of gloves? Kayaking gloves? Bicycle gloves? What?
I used to get really bad blisters when I rowed too, but those occurred mainly when I rowed with the newer, non-wooden oars. I bought a pair of weightlifting gloves and those worked REALLY well as far as protecting my hands until they were able to heal. They gripped well and prevented more blisters.
Apart from that, you’ll want to work on toughening your hands so you don’t get the blisters at all. Stop using lotion (i don’t know anything about the burt’s bees cornhuskers lotion, so I can’t recommend it or say it’s not any good), and try to keep your hands dry. My hands sweat a lot, and the newer oars don’t absorb the moisture, so it’s just a bad situation whenever I row with them.
I’ve heard that if you make a solution of hot salt water and soak the palms of your hands in it for ~5 min every day/ every other day it’ll help dry your hands out and make them as tough as you need them to be. I’ve not tried this, but it makes logical sense that the salt would toughen your skin.
Rowing is not a sport for soft, touchable hands : )
