Why does my saddle pad slip more on one side ?
I ride english , I have a all purpose saddle and a all purpose saddle pad . We stay mostly on a left lead . My problem is that the saddle pad seems to slip back more on the left side then on the right side . It’s a fleece saddle apd , i know they aren’t as good , but it was all we could find at the time . Got any answers ? Thanks
Next time you look at your horse, see if there is an apparent muscle build on one side vs. the other. Horses’s will often have a shoulder that is more ‘beefy’ than the other. This can cause slip. Also, if you are on the left lead, you are dipping into the left, which would cause your body to rock left, meaning your saddle will slip-slip-slip each time he beats a cadence through the canter. Also, depending on the breed, if he has high withers or shallow shoulders, then it could slip to the shoulder that is less used, i.e. the less powerful shoulder. There are non-slip pads for $10 on horse.com or other websites made of neoprene that keep the saddle pad in place. They fit right under the front of the saddle. However, finding a pad with the straps that attach around the girth and under the flap of the saddle will also assist in keeping the pad in place. You don’t want to rub him raw in any place, so make sure you get full coverage of the pad. If its slipping, its rubbing. Hope this helped!
